50 years on from Woodstock: when the legend continues to influence fashion
It was not only a popular music festival, but a cultural turning point, in society and fashion. Here’s how Woodstock came to us
The girls of Woodstock dictate fashion even now
The most iconic image that comes to mind is a young girl with loose wavy hair and a headband that follows the sound, wearing only a pair of trousers. Fantastic music (the Doors, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix), the environment is relaxed as it is natural, all dressed in a style of fashion that does not yield to compromises. No labels, no logos, but lots of handmade details.
That fashion, of floral prints, wide-leg trousers and crochet, has been passed on to us thanks to numerous proposals from contemporary designers that continue to reinterpret hippy style from the ’60s, with a bold vision albeit with nostalgia.
Today, all this, says “vintage”, “outdated”, but this musical event of 1969 has a powerful charge of innovation and charm that still influences modern culture. Let’s think about Coachella or Glasgow: the outfits of many international celebrities revisit what hippie girls wore as much as 50 year ago but with the eyes of contemporaries. As time passes, those images remain imprinted and more powerful than ever. You can’t go without a fringed vest top, triangular bikinis, crochet dresses and flared trousers.
50 years after Woodstock
To commemorate the occasion, Live Nation has organized a musical festival, still at Bethel, the 16 to 18th August. The event will be under the name of Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival. Ready to dust off hippy fashion this summer? Put aside florals, lace and denim for the suitcase. In case of any doubts, below are some fashionable items you could choose.
