Wes Anderson style is in fashion
While we wait for the new feature film, The French Dispatch, from director Wes Anderson, here are a few elements (not only cinematographic) that have defined his style
The French Dispatch seems to be a declaration of love to the world of journalism: the plot, it seems, is inspired by a New Yorker, while the names of Bill Murray and Timothée Chalamet guarantee a successful film.
Without giving too much away, this film is perfectly positioned in Anderson’s style, a parallel universe rich with fashion virtuosity that refers to the vintage world. Apparently ugly, straightaway details are perceived as cult elements of an era, of a generation and an accent of a character. Here they become a fetish for what they represent, beyond contemporary trends.
You could change the story, the setting and the costume designers, but the stile of Anderson is so strong and reinforced film after film. In fact, Gwyneth Paltrow’s fur outfit in The Royal Tenenbaums is unforgettable, striped mini dress and clothespin in the hair, just like the insect jewelry shown off by a young Suzy Bishop in Moonrise Kingdom. All the items that you can find in the wardrobe of your aunt or a rather eccentric grandmother. Nothing new but ready to come back to life.
The same can be said for the men’s wardrobe tha,t with this latest film, is enriched with new elements: think of Owen Wilson’s French beret to the unconvincing colored vest or Adrien Brody's double-breasted suit worn without any great occasion.
However, a huge part of our attention will be captured by Timothée Chalamet: in The French Dispatch he has long and ruffled hair, with a goatee just visible, while his look is characterized by a herringbone jacket worn over a sweater and a polo shirt.
