The romantic rhapsody of Jacquemus: between fashion, cinema, and the soul of Provence

The romantic rhapsody of Jacquemus: between fashion, cinema, and the soul of Provence

Five years ago, Anna Wintour asked me if I wanted to work for a big house, and I told her - I already have a big house: it's called Jacquemus.

In an extraordinary 14-year career, Simon Porte Jacquemus has led us to unique places, from the fragrant lavender fields of Provence to the Palace of Versailles, passing through Arles - the city that inspired Van Gogh's paintings - and the exotic beaches of Honolulu, to the most delicate moments of his private life. A journey that has transformed him from the enfant prodige of French fashion to a globally acclaimed designer. With his authentic and passionate representation, we have seen him elegantly redefine the current canons of success in the world of fashion, which bows season after season to his bold vision and always radiant smile.

His fashion audience is constantly in eager anticipation of his unusual runway shows, each of which is part of an extraordinary ensemble that aims to be a touching tribute to the designer's mother, who passed away too soon in a tragic car accident when he was still a teenager. In 1997, at the age of 7, Simon drew his first creation for her: a wonderful beige linen dress that Valèrie Jacquemus wore the next day to accompany him to school. In addition to always being faithful to his Provencal roots, the designer draws inspiration from classic films in each collection and celebrates his culture through retro, chic, and glamorous creations. Summer accessories in the brightest shades pay homage to his native South, while each creation is permeated by a constant tribute to his mother.

His minimalist, simple, and authentic essence stands out from the stereotypes of cold and mysterious creators. Jacquemus, starting from scratch as a self-taught designer, left big fashion houses to carve his own path, conquering Paris Fashion Week at just 22 in 2012 and receiving the prestigious LVMH Prize in 2015. Simon, known for his cinematic tributes, created a short film inspired by 'La Boum' from 1980 to present his 'Le Sport 90' collection in 2012. His connection with cinema continues with creations inspired by films like 'Pauline at the Beach' and 'Contempt' in the following years.

The journey culminated in the stunning 'Le Chouchou' runway show during the 2023 Men's Fashion Week in Versailles, featuring the beautiful Gigi Hadid. The designer unveiled his new Spring/Summer 2024 collection, where red, white, and blue hues evoked French national pride. Models walked the red carpet, creating a romantic atmosphere with dresses inspired by Princess Diana and 1800s architecture. Flowy skirts, balloon sleeves, and lace details defined the volumes, while mini lengths added a bold and contemporary touch.

With his extraordinary talent, Jacquemus reaffirms himself as one of the most promising designers of his generation. His brand, steeped in cultural references, love for the arts of cinema and photography, framed by the soul of Provence, continues to tell a personal universe that has captivated the world, proving that true innovation lies in authentic passion and the unique vision of an artist.
