Jacket vs blazer: how to recognize them and choose the coolest designs
We explain the difference between jackets and blazers for a perfect men’s wardrobe also in its terminology.
We discovered a curious fact among our customers: not everyone knows the difference between jacket and blazer. Similar but not equal, distinguished by their nature, considered as 'cousins' in modern tailoring. To explain it, we look at history when the bourgeois class first defined the 'uniform' of the sartorial suit.
We are at the end of the 1800s and for the first time in tailoring we hesr talking about the jaquette, a quite long, padded, and lined jacket which is worn in coordination with a pair of trousers. Thus, was born the men’s jacket, created to be part of a wider context, then in combination with the underlying garment and, when necessary, even the vest.
The blazer, however, sees the light in 1825 when the rowing club of St. John’s College of Cambridge creates a red outerwear called 'blazer' (from the English blaze). The blazing color defines the story of the first blazer, created to be worn regardless of the coordinated and that differs from the jacket in some details, such as the shape of the shoulder less rounded and blunt. The men’s blazer outfit is casual, at least on the surface, and requires creative commitment, that of the combinations that today do not exclude even jeans or a turtleneck.
Among the types of blazers that can be found on the market today, fashion defines the line and fabrics, but the lightness conferred by a simple lining remains a must. Today the men’s trends propose the classic double-breasted both with contrasting gold buttons, with a sailor taste, and with an accentuated but undefined overtone, as the tailoring of Off-White or Gucci wants.
The neutral shades stand up among the elegant blazers : if black and gray are read with austerity, here is that the navy-blue variant becomes a classic of the casual chic wardrobe, perfect with denim or light trousers, so the outerwear par excellence in summer evenings is elected. And for autumn? Our advice is to invest in the softness of velvet.
