Women's designer furs and eco-furs

Among the trends of the latest fashion catwalks, a specific place is taken by designer furs and ecological versions, great classics that will never go out of fashion. Compared to the 80s, however, the design has been revisited and now minimal chic models are preferred, with clean and essential lines. Both in natural and synthetic versions, fur coats are the strong point of winter outwear, especially appreciated by those who love to amaze and have a strong personality. But let's discover some curiosities of this great cult that finds its roots in antiquity.

Fur, a necessity or a status symbol?

Today, a fur garment is synonymous with prestige and captivating aesthetics, but in the past it was a real garment to cover up and shelter from the cold. During the Roman Empire, skins and furs were the symbol of the wealth of noble patricians, while in the Middle Ages and in Christianity it became the prerogative of the men of the Church, a display of temporal power. Fur as we interpret it, on the other hand, is transformed into a prêt-à-porter garment especially between the seventies and the eighties, a time when the first Italian fashion designers emerge. Furthermore, this is precisely the moment in which the discrepancy between the natural and synthetic versions becomes clearer. In general, however, there is a common thread that unites all the models of designer fur, both natural, synthetic and artificial, in the ecological versions. The leitmotif is the desire to amaze and stand out with an outfit that makes the difference, just think of the great divas like Marylin Monroe who sported voluminous white headdresses on the occasion of social events. If we want, instead, to consider the cultural and customs significance, fur has always been part of a kitsch imaginary declined, together with the animalier, to particular contexts such as the cinema of the 30s and the great colossal. In summary, the fur garment, fury, soft and fluffy, has always been part of an extroverted, excessive context, of the avant-garde and transgression, but has encountered a certain oscillation of trend over the ages.

Furs and eco-furs nowadays

The battle between natural and synthetic fur is increasingly alive, so much so that many brands and fashion designers are completely cruelty free, such as Jimmy Choo. To date, these are mainly made with natural fabrics such as cotton and silk, blended with sustainable synthetic fibers with zero environmental impact, perhaps recovered from recycled fabrics. The most innovative fashion designers work in this direction, with the mission of combining an essential and minimal chic style with attention to materials and sustainable production.
