Women's coats: history
Over the years women's coat had a remarkable transformation from functional outerwear to becoming a fashion item, a must-have in any woman's wardrobe. Where does the modern coat, which every woman possesses amongst her clothing, have its roots? Its first appearance was registered around the 1700s in France, to be precise at the court of King Sun. In this specific historical period, ancestors of some of the most common items of clothing are recorded today, including coats and outerwear. At the time of King Sun beauty was the best form of self-expression; for this reason, King Sun's court was composed exclusively of well-dressed and well-groomed men and women, who wore extravagant clothes in bright colors. The real coat for women was made around the1800s, as a variation of the male model. Italy carried out a fundamental task in the creation of a similar item of clothing, the 'doglietta'. With comfortable lines and a loose fit, it was composed of silk and often adorned with a fur collar and sleeves to make it more elegant. Gradually, the idea of the coats and outerwear was taken up by great designers, who made it the centerpiece of their fashion collections. Year after year, fashion evolved and as a result the stylistic preference by commercial demand also changed. Women wanted to feel protected and warm without abandoning style. Numerous variants of the outerwear and the classic coat with soft lines proposed in the1800s followed, each of which was characterized by a specific style. Materials used were varied, from wool to silk and the most advanced technical fabrics of recent years.
How the coat has evolved today
