The new man's shirt for summer 2019 is a hymn to the carefree attitude, thanks to vibrant colors and those patterns that know of sun, sea and sand. In short, we're looking to the surfers of Hawaii who respond to a greeting with 'aloha'.
The fashion wave arrives directly from Honolulu and its surroundings: tourism has grown thanks to digital postcard showing Barack Obama on vacation, the cool local bars opening on the beach and the latest food trend that is conquering Europe, Poke (read po-kay). All excellent conditions to get you back wearing those shirts with floral, colorful and funny prints. So, don't be surprised if this year they also land on the Riviera.
Aloha shirt
Like many fashion items, the appeal of the Hawaiian shirt has a rather cyclical lifespan, linked to the imagery of these heavenly places. Between the ‘20s and ‘50s, it had its maximum splendor, closely connected to tourism: during such period the state of Hawaii was one of the most sought-after destinations.
Responsible for the launch of the 'aloha shirt' into the fashion scene seems to have been a group of local boys, from the Waikiki beaches, who started to wear these extravagant shirts (at the time), produced by a tailor in the center of Honolulu and the cinema did the rest. Think Elvis Presley in Blue Hawaii or the Thomas Magnum character in the tv series Magnum P.I. played by Tom Selleck.
Dale Hope, ex producer of Hawaiian shirts and author of Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands, wrote that 'in 1937 the sales of Hawaiian shirts and other cotton garments in the United States reached $128,000: every year sports garments made in Hawaii worth more than $600,000 were sent to American shores; the sector employed 450 people'.
