Oppenheimer and that classic style that will define men's fashion for Autumn 2023
This is how the Oppenheimer film marks the return of classic men's fashion: jackets, high-waisted trousers, and hats for Autumn 2023.
One thing is sure in this 2023: movies set the current fashion trends. We've heard so much about Barbiecore, which revolves around pink in a Barbie version, anticipating Greta Gerwig's blockbuster: stars and royals have started embracing this craze with pink accessories and looks, displaying clear references to the world's most famous doll. But the film starring the blonde Margot Robbie was released in the USA last July, simultaneously with Oppenheimer (in Italy, the wait lasted until August 23rd), a work dedicated to the scientist and inventor of the atomic bomb. And immediately there was a 'fight' of trends, between pink and black, between the fantasy world and historical reality, to the point of creating the word Barbenheimer.
Despite the Barbie fever, many lean towards the austerity and complexity of Oppenheimer. The face is that of the Irishman Cillian Murphy, but the inspiration is that of David Bowie in his 'Thin White Duke' phase. The actor has indeed worked closely with the costume designer to achieve a precise silhouette: well-defined and structured in contrast to J. Robert Oppenheimer's lean and fragile body. In historical photographs, he appears thin due to numerous Martinis and cigarettes.
The result is a look with oversized classic trousers to create an elegant yet cool image, cleansed of the glaze of time. The Borsalino-style hat is not missing, along with well-ironed shirts, well-structured jackets, and belts that define the waistline, all in shades ranging from earthy brown to dusty grey. Beyond the history and biography of a man who shaped the fate of World War II, Oppenheimer turns out to be (unexpectedly) a fashion movie, and the protagonist is its star: it captivates with its genius but also its strong sense of glamour, thus bringing classic style back into men's fashion.
