Suitcase for Marrakech: must-have garments and accessories

Suitcase for Marrakech: must-have garments and accessories

Fashionable Marrakech. A list of garments and accessories to put in your suitcase

If you consider yourself a fashionista, then this is the year of Marrakech. Firstly, it is where the latest Dior collection was presented, and it was one of the most 'instagrammable' places for the restort collection fashion week. The second reason is almost implied: you can find the house, now museum, of Yves Saint Laurent. Equally, for those passionate about Sex & The City, Carrie finds her iconic babouche in one of the souks in Marrakech and meets her ex Aiden.

Marrakech stimulates the senses: you can breathe in the sharp aromas and perfumes; it's chaotic amongst the spellcasters and vociferous markets; it's rich with colors, a continuous stimulus for the eyes between the red of the earth and the color palette of spices and hand-woven fabrics. It is no coincidence that Marrakech is called 'the city if four colors': the blue of the sky, the ochre walls, the green palm leaves and the white of the snow of the nearby Atlas mountains.

It’s a place that wants to be discovered: other than local markets, the souks, this city is famous for the arabesque riads. The ancient houses of the wealthy are beautifully structured with emerald green plants and garden courtyards with spectacular fountains, an oasis of wellness and relaxation that contemporary history has transformed into resorts and hotels.

Not only this, Marrakech is considered to be a sort of Mecca for architecture: the ancient part is a jewel to discover, while the profane structures of Muslim inspiration find their maximum expression in royal palaces, such as El Badi, Palais la Bahia, il Museo Dar si Said, le Tombe Saadiane and la Medersa di Ben Youssef.

What to put in your suitcase for Marrakech

For the day it's better to choose garments made from lightweight fabrics. For those who want to adapt to the local fashion, go for geometric blouses and tunics to match khaki-colored trousers. A large bag, a straw hat and a pair of comfortable shoes in a natural sole are the perfect accessories for exploring. It is advisable to always wear a headscarf in places of worship or to shelter from the wind that comes from the desert.

The city comes alive at night with street shows: improvised concerts, acrobats and snake charmers. For such an occasion a flowing dress is perfect, a shawl to cover your arms and a pair of flat elegant sandals.

For the Nouvelle Ville a more elegant dress and heel would be more suitable. So the inspiration is Yves Saint Laurent: you can in fact find the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, the villa was purchased and restored by the designer, now a museum and center for international fashion.
