Rising through the ranks with Christian Dior, the fashion prince of the Rive Gauche, as he was known in the sector, makes his debut: in 1962 a young Yves Saint Laurent with his non-conformist spirit overturned the French bon ton of the time. His atelier, founded with his partner and collaborator Bergé, is purely avant-garde, a tribute to Mondrian's art and Andy Warhol's Pop Art. Yves Saint Laurent is the first to introduce the tuxedo designed exclusively for women: the outfits worn by divas such as Marlene Dietrich were iconic, wearing men’s Yves Saint Laurent suits with class, elegance and a remarkable dose of boldness and self-irony. “Coco Chanel gave women freedom and I gave them power”: this is Yves Saint Laurent and their brand identity’s mantra that still characterises the brand today. Alber Elbaz and his innovative spirit distinguish the Maison and the prêt-a-porter line in 1998 with tulle and chiffon clouds; then Tom Ford makes his debut under the wing of Gucci and Saint Laurent adding warmth and sensuality. In 2004, designer Tom Ford left the Maison to found his own brand and was succeeded by the designer Stefano Pilati who brought back a soberer and less explosive allure, revisiting the female tuxedo, the tulip skirt and the Saharan. After the death of Yves Saint Laurent and a strenuous re-branding endeavour that caused the loss of the name Yves from the brand, Hedi Slimane, who restored the glam rock style to the brand, and Anthony Vaccarello (with his Italian origins, synonymous with style and innovation) took the lead of Maison Saint Laurent in 2016.
