Designer sweatshirts for women
The sweatshirt is among the most popular tops in the world. Initially consigned to the world of sport and underground youth culture, over time it has become an item proposed in many versions and has even penetrated the sector of haute couture, with the trend of designer sweatshirts for women being taken up by leading fashion designers worldwide. Today we can say that the sweatshirt is an item of clothing that has caught up with other types of jumpers in terms of status, if not actually surpassing some, even though until very recently it was impossible to see them on the catwalks.
The story of the sweatshirt: from underground to mainstream
What material is used for sweatshirts? A sweatshirt is made with a circular weft plain stitch knit fabric. This material can be made on a machine called a “teasel gig” that raises the nap on the inner side and is used for heavier, winter fleeces. For a lighter sweatshirt, on the other hand, the fabric can remain ‘unteaseled’ and thus less warm. It was created in the 20s and produced for the first time by Russel Europe, the sportswear brand. Later, it was modified and adapted for builders by the Champion brand. It broke free from the sports and labourer worlds, into everyday wear, before becoming a cult item among streetwear fans: skaters, writers, and all those who chose to stay away from the mainstream. The new proposals were unisex; but, as often happens, anything underground tends to become a source of inspiration for designers, who started to create models for wear on the catwalk. And so today designer sweaters for women come in a variety of styles: with and without hoods, but much more than that in terms of choice. Asymmetric or cropped (to the waist), with or without zip, in smart evening versions or with the trendiest logo prints. An item that was originally for more informal occasions has now become a key player in any situation, always standing out as a symbol of personality and attitude.

Of course, sweatshirts continue to be made by the most famous sports brands like Adidas, Nike, etc., as they also retain their cool and casual character. But what happens when the haute couture brands produce sweatshirts? This is how we find the silver sweaters of Golden Goose Deluxe Brand, to be worn with stiletto ankle boots, or the looser and impressive asymmetric versions with hoods by The Attico. Gucci likes to print its GG logo and make its mark on its sweater, offering trousers with the same motif to match, or with fun and colourful prints. As well as colours, designers express their creativity with different shapes and forms, to offer women designer sweatshirts that are always unique and stand out from the mass-produced versions. It’s a way to reinvent an item which might have been considered ‘second-rate’ but takes on a whole new character when interpreted by the leading fashion houses. So, if it seems strange to consider going to a glamorous evening event in a sweatshirt, think again and take a look at these up-to-date versions. It was thought that after the lockdown, the trend for comfy dressing would pass but thanks to vibrant colours, trendy options like tie-dye, prints, and eye-catching graphics, women’s designer sweatshirts are now super-chic and great with tartan trousers (one of the coolest trends of 2022) or leather shorts. Over-size, poncho style, cropped or slim-fit: the versatility of this item will ensure its star status throughout the autumn/winter season. Talking of bright colours, make way for cheerful neon solutions; a way to wipe out the melancholic atmosphere created by the global crisis of the last two years, and a way for fashion to fight back with the imagination and casual comfort of a sweatshirt from leading fashion designers happy to put their names to these must-have items.
